Pain Point 1: Finding volunteers in the midst of a pandemic.
Right now, we know that you and your church are feeling the effects of COVID-19. Your services are now a fraction of what they used to be, all of your events are canceled, and your entire staff is displaced.
As the world is constantly changing, we are learning to adapt. We are currently moving into this “new normal” phase, but what does this look like for you and your church? What does this look like for your events? What does this look like for your ministries?
Without a doubt, you and your church are experiencing pain in this transition to the new normal. You are starting to meet again and resuming your ministry areas. This means you need volunteers…again.
Since your ministries and events have been canceled for the past couple of months, it feels like you are building from ground zero when it comes to finding volunteers. Not everyone who served is willing and able to again. You may be asking yourself, “How do I recruit volunteers at a time like this? It’s hard enough when we aren’t in the middle of a pandemic!”
Here are some ideas to help recruit volunteers during this new season:
- People want to feel safe.
- They want to know that when they come to serve at your church, it’s clean and the necessary precautions are taken. Communicate your action plan and what the new policies will look like so everyone is in the loop.
- Set expectations.
- People don’t want to commit to things right now because they don’t know what tomorrow will look like. Make it known what you’re expecting from them. It may be a good idea to have volunteers commit to 1 or 2 weeks at a time. That way they aren’t overwhelmed and would be more willing to volunteer. Your normal 3, 6, or 12-month time commitment may be too much.
Have clear communication from start to finish. In the beginning, if you don’t have a lot of volunteers, limit which ministries you open. Always practice safe social distancing and cleaning regulations.
This “new season” seems scary, but step by step, we are in this together.
