5 Steps to Know When Software Training is Needed at Your Church

The following is an excerpt from the ACS Technologies eNews:
First, let’s ask this question: What can software training do for your staff?

  • Increase productivity – Knowing the best and fastest way to do a job means getting tasks done correctly and faster.
  • Help develop more effective, engaged staff – When people know how to do their job, they become more effective and more engaged with their work and the larger organizational goals.
  • Improve retention rates – This is often overlooked, but many times employees are more loyal to companies that value their growth and want to cultivate it. If an employee thinks a company values him or her, that sentiment overlaps into whatever the employee is working on.
  • Reduce stress – I’m not saying stress will go away, but when people know how to do their job, they don’t stress over whether or not they are doing their assigned tasks correctly.
  • Encourage innovation – Using software is more than just knowing the steps to get a job done. When staff knows what software can do, they can innovate and work in changing circumstances.

Those are great outcomes. But how do you know when to know when training is needed at your church?
1. Conduct a needs analysis
What competencies must a person have to do a specific job?
What competencies does your staff have at this time?
2. Compare competencies
Compare job needs with the person’s skillset and then identify the needs.
Check to see why a person is not performing up to job expectations:
Work process issue
Not having the right tools
Not knowing how to do the task
Personnel issues
3. Identify the issue
If the problem is because of work processes, not having the right tools, or personnel issues, then these are internal processes that must be addressed (and probably a subject for another eNews). If the issue is the person doesn’t know how to do specific tasks, then training is the answer.
4. Training options
Once you know that training needs to happen, you can look at the various options and decide what type is best. Depending on the software you are talking about, many training options may be available. Make sure the training fits the need.
5. Prepare
Once the correct training is decided upon, the office and trainee can do several things to prepare. Poor planning can detract from the actual training.
