Motivating Others in the New Year

happy new year

happy new year2016 has been a rough year. The political landscape was exhausting, several beloved celebrities have passed, and most people are worn out. Thankfully, 2017 is a new year. It is a blank canvas that, by God’s grace, we can make into something beautiful. Many people need fresh motivation, and leaders must find ways to motivate others if they are going to impact the world. Here’s a quick sample of some great resources for increasing and maintaining motivation.

1) Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle.

Leaders share why they’re doing things before they share what they’re doing and how they’re going to do it. When people know why you’re doing things, it’s easier for them to buy into the logistical parts of the process. This is a great principal to use when introducing something new to people.

2) Dan Ariely’s Predictably Irrational.

People don’t always make rational decisions. Sometimes, we make irrational ones in predictable ways. Ariely speaks to the power of emotion and ownership in decision making. Leading others, especially volunteers, requires a solid understanding of the things that inspire people. This resources helps those working with volunteers.

3) Daniel Pink’s Drive.

Why do some people lose their motivation while others keep it? Pink explains how autonomy, mastery, and purpose work together to both motivate people and keep them motivated. Great leaders know that keeping people motivated means just as much as getting them motivated. This is a great tool for those looking to keep people moving in the right direction. 4) Jesus.

There’s no greater motivator than Christ. He drew people from every walk of life to His cause. He brought together pharisees, zealots, tax Collectors, and fishermen. He inspires people to leave their lives and embrace His. Studying the life of Christ and connecting with Him through His Spirit will do more to motivate others than 100,000 good ideas. You can read more about Him in your Bible.

May 2017 be a year of blessing for your family and impact for your ministry. May you stay motivated and may you motivate others.
