Time to Appreciate Volunteers Too!

Where would your church be without volunteers? Churches tend to have very lean, overworked staff, regardless of the size of the church. Therefore, we all need to rely on the help of others to reach our ministry goals!

And while October is pastor appreciation month, it’s also a good time to appreciate all of our staff and volunteers!

Volunteers are a special breed in giving of themselves and offering up their unique skills, gifts, and talents to serve your church and lighten the workload of your staff. One in four adults, 63 million, volunteer! The amount of work handled by volunteers varies from church to church but on average it could be anywhere from 20 – 40% of a church’s workload. That would be a huge void to fill!

So during the month of October take a minute and say, “Thank you” to your volunteers. Show them appreciation for all the work they are doing and let them know how they are assisting your church in furthering its mission!

Here are a few easy ways to show your volunteers how much you appreciate them:

  • Send thank-you notes!
  • Add a section of thanks to your websites and bulletins.
  • Do a quarterly volunteer spotlight and tell a particular volunteer’s story.
  • Send a small token of appreciation like a coffee shop gift card.
  • Do an annual volunteer awards ceremony.

Volunteers don’t do what they do for the recognition but it’s always important to remember to show appreciation to let them know how important they are to your church’s mission.
